Mujeres Creando | Women Creating is a platform for Latin American and Spanish women playwrights to raise their voices for Human Rights, from their own perspectives and through their own stories.

Theater is where those voices become a force that can challenge, unsettle, question, and bring to light what can no longer be ignored.

An international jury of recognized figures from theater, literature, poetry, and academia will select one winning play.

$1,000 USD

The Theatrical Concert of the selected play will be presented in Chicago in March 2027, during Women’s History Month and in celebration of World Theatre Day.

TIMELINE

  • Open Call: September 29 to November 15, 2026
  • Submission Deadline: November 15, 2026 · 11:59 p.m. (Central Time)
  • Winner Announced: December 10, 2026 | Human Rights Day
  • English Translation Due: February 10, 2027
  • Theatrical Concert: March 2027
 

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Eligibility: The call is open to women playwrights who identify as Latin American or Spanish, including first and second generation descendants, regardless of their country of residence.

  2. Theme: The play should engage with themes connected to Human Rights, human dignity, social justice, freedom, identity, The rights of women and children, migration and displacement, memory, belonging, or other issues that reflect the complexities of our shared human experience.

    These themes may be approached from personal, community, social, cultural, or global perspectives.

  3. Originality: The play must be original.

  4. Language: The play must be written in Spanish.

  5. Document Format: Submissions must be presented in a conventional theatrical play script format, using a clear, consistent, and recognizable structure throughout the document.The script must clearly distinguish between character dialogue and stage directions.

    Each character must be clearly identified by name before their respective lines. Stage directions must be clearly distinguishable from dialogue and used to indicate actions, movements, settings, entrances, exits, and other elements necessary for understanding the action and staging of the play.

    Submissions must be presented as a complete theatrical script. We will not accept texts presented primarily as narrative prose, poetry, essays, screenplays, treatments, outlines, synopses, or other literary or non-theatrical formats. We will also not accept experimental or hybrid dramaturgical formats that do not maintain a clear and consistent conventional structure of character dialogue and stage directions throughout the script.

    The submitted document must be self-contained and readable as a theatrical script without requiring the reader to interpret, reconstruct, or infer its basic dramatic structure.

    Clarity, readability, and consistency of formatting are required for the submission. Failure to comply with these formatting requirements may result in the work being deemed ineligible.

    LENGTH AND FORMATTING REQUIREMENTS

    • The play must be a minimum of 20 pages and a maximum of 40 pages.
    • Page size: Letter (8.5 × 11 in.)
    • Font: Arial, 12 pt
    • Line spacing: 1.15
    • Page numbers: Pages must be numbered beginning with the second page, following the cover page.

       

  6. Characters: The play may include up to seven characters. Monologues, as well as works for one or multiple characters, are welcome.

  7. Submission Limit: Each author may submit one play only.

    Authors who have previously been selected as winners of Mujeres Creando are not eligible to participate in this edition.

  8. Translation: The winning author must provide an English translation of the play no later than February 10, 2027.

    The translation will be used to create the English subtitles for the Theatrical Concert.

JURY:

Submissions will be evaluated by an international jury of distinguished figures from: Theater, Literature, Poetry, and Academia.

The jury will select one winning play to be presented in the Theatrical Concert in Chicago in March 2027.

THEATRICAL CONCERT

The winning play will be as a Theatrical Concert in Chicago in March 2027
during Women’s History Month and in celebration of World Theatre Day.

The Theatrical Concert will include English subtitles based on the translation provided by the author.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • Submissions will be accepted exclusively through the official online application form and must include all required materials.
  • Submissions sent by email, postal mail, or any other means will not be considered.
  • Only one play per author will be accepted.
  • Once submitted, no modifications or alternate versions will be accepted.
  • Plays that do not meet the stated requirements may be excluded from the selection process.
  • The jury’s decision will be announced on December 10, 2026, Human Rights Day, and published through Water People Theater’s official social media channels and at waterpeople.org.
